Clean Elections Commission weighs in on redistricting suit
14 May 2012 | 12:59 pmAdd the Clean Elections Commission to the list of groups hoping to intervene in the federal lawsuit over Arizona's new legislative-district map. The commission oversees the state's public-campaign-finance system and therefore, it argues, is directly affected by the challenge to the new district lines. The commission has a duty to ensure the 2012 election proceeds smoothly, and the prospect of another legislative map so close to the Aug. 28 primary could complicate that operation, the commission argues in a motion filed with the U.S. District Court. Like the Maricopa County Recorder's Office,… -

Playing off a Mother's Day theme, the alliance expressed regret the Legislature didn't restore funding for programs that help families and mothers in need, from housing assistance to child-care subsidies to health care. Programs that assist grandparents raising their grandkids have gone away with no prospect of returning. Jerry Lewis: I'm used to it
10 May 2012 | 2:46 pmAt a forum discussing a proposed open primary strategy for Arizona, state Sen. Jerry Lewis, R-Mesa, became a key exhibit. Attorney Grady Gammage, who supports the Open Elections/Open Government Act, pointed to last fall's recall election of Senate President Russell Pearce as an example of how a non-partisan election could take the extreme edges off the state Legislature. Lewis defeated Pearce, but voters still chose a conservative candidate, Gammage said. The word "conservative" drew boos and shouts from the crowd at the forum sponsored by the O'Connor House. Apparently, many…

Integrating Devise with Backbone.js
30 Apr 2012 | 2:30 pmFor the impatient: view the code, or see the demo. Several weeks ago I set out to create a single page web app leveraging Backbone.js on the front end with Ruby on Rails powering the back end. In the architecture for this application, Rails is essentially just a JSON API. All of the front-end magic happens with Backbone.js and related friends. Granted, Rails is doing a lot more boilerplate than just acting as an API, but the separation of the UI code and back-end code is a lot clearer in this model. read more -
jQuery with Rails 3
8 Feb 2010 | 4:04 pmUpdate: Since this article was written, the jquery-ujs project has been turned into a gem which includes a generator that streamlines this process. Instructions can be found in the README for the Github project. One of the most talked about features in Rails 3 is its plug & play architecture with various frameworks like Datamapper in place of ActiveRecord for the ORM or jQuery for javascript. However, I've yet to see much info on how to actually do this with the javascript framework. Fortunately, it looks like a lot of the hard work has already been done. Rails now emits HTML that is… -
Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs (SICP) for Kindle
11 Sep 2009 | 5:22 amI just started reading the SICP book (Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs, by Abelson, Sussman, and Sussman) which MIT Press has so graciously made available on their website. I'm not very fond of sitting in front of a computer screen to read books, so I mirrored their copy locally and converted it into a prc file (using Mobipocket Creator) so I could read it on my Kindle. Here it is for anyone else who wants to save a bit of time. It is provided under Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial 3.0 Unported License. -

Are rain storms good for car washes?
13 May 2012 | 6:30 pmThis post is part of an ongoing series entitled “a post a day every other day for the month of May.” It’s an unfolding exploration of the concepts from the book “Get Lucky.” We are volcanoes, making new land, Transcending borders with seeds in our hands. Natural killers perfectly planned, But all is entirely out of our hands. -Sleeping at Last We’re nearly halfway through May but only 1/4 through the book. In the interest of staying on track I’m declaring posting bankruptcy on this chapter and doing a quick brain dump of my thoughts in this single… -

The authors discuss a handful of examples of how this works in practice. From Phil Jackson’s zen coaching exercises to the case of the floppy-eared… -

Waste the hours with talking, talking These twisted games we play. -"The Space Between" by Dave Matthews Band Preparation is the second skill discussed in the book and is the vital step that ensures we have our front porch swept, the welcome mat out and we’re expectant hosts when serendipity arrives. Mental off roading
5 May 2012 | 6:31 pmThis post is part of an ongoing series entitled “a post a day for the month of May.” It’s an unfolding exploration of the concepts from the book “Get Lucky.” If Motion is the skill that generates the raw seeds of serendipity then Preparation is the skill that ensures they fall on fertile ground. In CH 3 the authors step through a series of stories that illustrate various examples of situations in which being mentally prepared allowed the subjects to make quantum leaps of reasoning. They distill the commonalities across various situations involving serendipity and…

The “Flying Mushroom” in Downtown Phoenix
14 May 2012 | 10:25 pmPHOENIX -- One of the more recent additions to the city's public art is large and a bit difficult to understand. Since being installed in the Civic Space Park in 2009, it has drawn considerable comment, not all of it favorable. Endicott Peabody: Religion Arrives in Helldorado
30 Apr 2012 | 10:36 pmOminous clouds hovered over Tombstone that January morning in 1882, as the Sandy Bob Stage rambled into town in a cloud of dust. The grey sky gave forewarning of a fast-approaching snowstorm. The passengers arriving that morning were, with one exception, typical— a military officer on his way to Fort Huachuca, an elderly Jewish peddler who told funny stories, a self-styled "millionaire" out to make another fortune... Winslow Drunk Driving Statistics
9 May 2012 | 1:36 pmAs experienced personal injury attorneys, we know that the current Winslow drunk driving statistics and total number of car crashes are too high for this small town. According to the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT), more than 130 car accidents happen in Winslow every year. Although more than 100 of these crashes result in damages to property without causing severe harm to anyone involved, approximately 22 percent of wrecks in the city were injury-causing or fatal auto accidents. Those involved in drunk driving accidents in Winslow also experience a high rate of death and injury.
